Finding water under your refrigerator is a common issue that can range from a simple fix to a more complex repair. Understanding the potential causes helps you determine whether this is a DIY situation or requires professional service.
The most frequent cause of water leakage is a clogged defrost drain. During the automatic defrost cycle, water drips into a drain pan. If this drain becomes clogged with food particles, ice, or mineral deposits, water will overflow onto your floor.
The water supply line connected to your ice maker or water dispenser can also leak. Check the connection at the back of the refrigerator for any signs of moisture or mineral buildup indicating a slow leak.
A cracked or overflowing drain pan is another possibility. This pan, located underneath the refrigerator, catches condensation and defrost water. If cracked or tilted, water will leak onto the floor.
Ice maker problems can cause leaks as well. A faulty inlet valve, cracked ice mold, or misaligned fill tube can all result in water escaping from the ice maker compartment.
In Arizona's hard water areas like Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, mineral buildup in water lines and valves is particularly common. Regular maintenance can prevent these issues.
Check the door gaskets for proper seal. Poor sealing causes excess moisture inside the refrigerator, which can overwhelm the drainage system and result in leaks.
For Sub-Zero and other luxury brands with built-in water filtration, a clogged or improperly installed filter can also cause leaking. Always follow manufacturer guidelines when replacing filters.
