Condenser coils are the unsung heroes of your refrigerator's cooling system. These coils release heat from the refrigeration process, and when dirty, they can't do their job effectively.

In Arizona, condenser coils accumulate dust faster than in many other regions. The fine desert dust, combined with pet hair and kitchen grease, creates a insulating layer that traps heat.

Locate your condenser coils first. On many Sub-Zero models, they're behind the front grille at the bottom. On other brands, they may be on the back of the unit.

Before cleaning, unplug the refrigerator or turn off the circuit breaker. Safety first when working around electrical components.

Use a condenser coil brush, available at appliance parts stores, to loosen debris. These long, narrow brushes are designed to reach between coil fins without damaging them.

Vacuum the loosened debris using a crevice attachment. Work carefully to avoid bending the delicate coil fins.

For stubborn buildup, a soft brush and mild detergent solution can help. Allow the coils to dry completely before restoring power.

Clean the area around the coils as well. Dust accumulating in this space will quickly transfer back to the clean coils.

For built-in refrigerators with limited access, professional cleaning may be necessary. The compact installation makes DIY cleaning difficult and potentially damaging.

After cleaning, you should notice the refrigerator running less frequently. This translates to energy savings and reduced wear on the compressor.
